Our Methodology

The Sit Means Sit Reno Lifestyle System

We don’t just teach commands — we build a dog you can take anywhere. Our system rests on four pillars.

1. Structured Training, Not Just Commands

Obedience is what your dog does on cue. Behavior is who your dog is the other 23 hours of the day. We train both.

2. Day-Train, Home Each Night

Your dog trains with our team by day and comes home each night — no overnight boarding, training built into real life.

3. We Train You, Too

After each training day, we coach you. You learn the same language your dog learns — so results last long after the program ends.

4. Lifetime Maintenance

Every program includes free lifetime group classes — ongoing reinforcement and a community to keep your dog sharp for life.

Our Guarantee

If your dog doesn’t improve as expected, we provide additional training at no extra charge until your goals are met.

I am so pleased and impressed with Sit Means Sit in general. My Aussie puppy did a three week board-and-train since my work schedule limited my ability to go to group classes.

We took our two pitbulls to Sit Means Sit for training. Sit Means Sit did a wonderful job training our dogs.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions About Dog Training in Reno

How does the Day Train program work?

Your dog spends the day training with our team and comes home each night — no overnight boarding. After each training day, we come to your home for a lesson so you learn the same tools. Each program runs over four weeks, with the schedule tailored to what your dog needs.

Do you train aggressive or reactive dogs?

Yes. Our Reactive Rehab program specializes in reactive, fearful, and aggressive dogs. We assess the root cause and build a structured, threshold-based plan to address it safely.

What areas do you serve?

The entire Reno–Sparks area and Northern Nevada — Reno, Sparks, Carson City, Spanish Springs, Sun Valley, South Reno, and surrounding communities.

How much does dog training cost in Reno?

It depends on your dog and goals. We start with a free evaluation to recommend the right program and walk you through the investment — no pressure. Call (775) 349-7345 or book online.

Is the training guaranteed?

Yes. If your dog isn’t ready by the end of week 4, we keep training at no extra cost until your goals are met. And after graduation, group classes are free for the lifetime of your dog.

Do you offer a free evaluation?

Yes — a free, no-obligation evaluation. We meet your dog, hear what’s going on, and recommend the right program. Book online or call (775) 349-7345.

How long does dog training take?

Most programs run about four weeks, with your dog training during the day and coming home each night. The exact schedule is tailored to your dog — and if you or your dog need more time to hit the goals we set together, we keep working at no extra charge.

What makes Sit Means Sit Reno different from other dog trainers?

We don’t send your dog away for weeks — our day-train approach keeps your dog home each night and trains YOU alongside your dog, so the results actually stick. We focus on real-world behavior (who your dog is the other 23 hours of the day), not just commands in a training room. And group classes are included free for the lifetime of your dog.

Can any dog be trained, regardless of age or breed?

Yes. We work with dogs of any age, any breed, and any behavioral challenge — from young puppies to senior dogs, and from basic manners to serious aggression or anxiety. Every program is customized to the individual dog.

Do you offer puppy training in Reno?

Yes. We offer structured puppy training that builds obedience, socialization, and house manners during the critical early developmental window — before problems develop. Call (775) 349-7345 to find the right fit for your puppy.

I was thinking about board & train — do you offer that?

Most dogs don’t need to be sent away for weeks. Our day-train program delivers the same structured results while keeping your dog home each night and teaching you the tools too — which is why the results last. Talk to us first in a free evaluation and we’ll help you decide what your dog actually needs.

When should I start training my puppy — and can you help with biting, potty training, and crate training?

Start now — we work with puppies as young as 8–10 weeks, and most families come to us with biting, potty accidents, chewing, and crate crying all at once. All of it is normal; none of it should be ignored, because early foundation work prevents these from becoming adult habits. Your puppy trains with us by day, comes home each night, and we coach you in your home. The evaluation is free.

My dog pulls so hard I can't walk them. Can that actually be fixed — even for a big or older dog?

Yes. Leash pulling is the single most common problem dog owners bring us, and one of the most fixable. Pulling isn't stubbornness — your dog has learned that pulling works. Our attention-based training teaches the opposite lesson, proofed on real walks, and age is not the barrier people think. We regularly fix pullers from 8 months to 10+ years old.

My dog barks and jumps whenever anyone comes to the house. Can you stop it?

Yes. Barking and jumping persist because they're self-rewarding — every visitor 'proves' the barking worked, and jumping earns touch and attention. We teach an incompatible behavior: a place command that holds while the door opens, proofed under real distraction, and we teach your whole household to run the same system at home.

My dog knows the commands but only listens at home. Why?

Dogs don't generalize — 'sit' in your kitchen and 'sit' at a busy park are different skills, and outside you're competing with the most interesting show on earth. Our high-distraction obedience work proofs every command under real-world distraction until it holds everywhere. That's the difference between a trick and obedience — and it's literally what 'sit means sit' means.

My dog is 8+ years old and has never been trained. Is it too late?

No — adult dogs often train faster than puppies: longer attention span, no teething chaos. What's harder is un-rehearsing years of habit, and that's a consistency problem our structured program solves, not an age problem. We adjust for joints, hearing, and Reno's seasons — not the standard. Any age, any breed, any challenge.

What certifications do your trainers have?

Every trainer here is a certified Sit Means Sit dog trainer. Our owner also helps teach the national Sit Means Sit trainer recertification school alongside founder Fred Hassen and VP Scott Sanchez — so the standard other Sit Means Sit trainers are certified against is the same standard your dog gets in Reno.

Do you offer financing or payment plans?

Yes — Klarna is built into our checkout, along with other financing options, so you can split the investment into manageable payments. Ask at your free evaluation and we'll walk you through exactly what's available, no pressure.
